HSW Hydraulic Ironworker
The HSW hydraulic ironworker from EBR METAL punches, shears and notches steel on one frame. It covers holes in plate and flat bar, cutting of flat bar, angle and solid round or square bar, and U-notching. The same machine is known in the UK as a hydraulic steelworker, and in Australia as a punch and shear.
Nine standard models run from 40 to 175 tonnes. The HSW 55, 65, 85, 115 and 175 have two hydraulic cylinders and two foot pedals, so two operators can work at the same time.

HSW Design
The HSW is a welded steel ironworker with separate stations for each operation:
- punching;
- flat bar and sheet shearing;
- angle shearing;
- round and square bar shearing;
- U-notching.
The material stays at one machine while the operator moves between stations.
The range comes in three builds:
- HSW 40: single cylinder, 4 stations, no notching station.
- HSW 45 and HSW 60: single cylinder, 5 stations.
- HSW 55, 65, 85, 115 and 175: two separate hydraulic cylinders and two foot pedals, so two operators can work independently. These models have an electric back gauge.
The HSW 65V is a compact single-cylinder model with vertical material cutting and an electric back gauge.

Choosing the HSW Hydraulic Ironworker
The HSW hydraulic ironworker fits shops that punch, cut and notch bar and section in the same jobs. Size it from the largest work: the biggest hole and its thickness, the heaviest angle and the thickest flat bar. Then decide how many people will use it. A single-cylinder model serves one operator. On the twin-cylinder models (HSW 55, 65, 85, 115, 175), a second operator can shear or notch while the first punches.
If most of the work is hole punching, the HDM hydraulic punching machine punches the same hole sizes as the HSW 65–175 models, without the shearing stations. For corner cuts in sheet metal, see the HCN hydraulic corner notching machine.
Typical work:
- steel construction and structural fabrication;
- transmission tower and wind tower stair and platform parts;
- agricultural machinery;
- trailer and vehicle bodies;
- construction machinery frames;
- gates, railings and general fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions About HSW
What is the difference between an ironworker and a steelworker?
They are the same type of machine. "Ironworker" is the usual name in North America, "steelworker" is common in the UK, and Australian suppliers often say punch and shear.
Can two operators use the HSW at the same time?
On the HSW 55, 65, 85, 115 and 175, yes. Each has two hydraulic cylinders and two foot pedals. The HSW 40, 45, 60 and 65V have a single cylinder.
Which HSW model has a notching station?
All models except the HSW 40. The notching capacity runs from 8 × 42 × 100 mm on the HSW 45 to 16 × 60 × 100 mm on the HSW 175.
Can the HSW bend flat bar and sheet?
Yes, with the optional press brake kit. The maximum depends on the model, for example 250 × 25 mm flat bar and 700 × 4 mm sheet on the HSW 175.
Are spare punches, dies and blades available?
Yes. EBR METAL makes the punches, dies and blades for the HSW and supplies them as spare parts. Punches and dies follow a common industry tooling standard.
