GMRL Guillotine Shears

The GMRL guillotine shear is an economical Direct-Gear machine for thin sheet metal cutting, with capacities up to 3 mm depending on model. Its straightforward mechanical configuration makes it suitable for workshops and production environments that do not require frequent blade-gap changes or automated backgauge positioning.

A 750 mm manual backgauge is standard, while servo motorized NC backgauge options are available when more frequent size changes or higher positioning accuracy are required.

Direct-Gear Cutting for Thin Sheet Production

GMRL uses EBR METAL’s Direct-Gear mechanical drive system for thin sheet cutting. The series shares the same manufacturing and component quality standards used across EBR METAL’s Direct-Gear guillotine shear range, while its lighter configuration is designed around lower sheet-thickness capacities.

One practical difference from the heavier GMRH series is blade-gap adjustment. GMRL does not require the front-operated blade-gap adjustment system used on GMRH. Because the machine works within a relatively narrow thin-sheet capacity range, normal production can be handled with a fixed blade-gap setting.

Fine adjustment remains possible at the blade mounting points when required after blade wear, regrinding or servicing.

  • Cutting capacities are calculated for ST37 (S235JR) material with approximately 370–400 N/mm² tensile strength.
  • Actual cutting suitability also depends on material grade, tensile strength, sheet thickness and required cutting length. Capacity for other materials should be confirmed with EBR METAL.

750 mm Manual Backgauge as Standard

The standard GMRL configuration uses a 750 mm manual backgauge.

Two parallel rack gears at the rear of the machine are mechanically linked so that the backgauge moves evenly. The operator adjusts its position using a handwheel and follows the measurement on the numerical mechanical readout next to the handwheel. Once the required position is reached, the backgauge can be locked to prevent movement during cutting.

This arrangement is practical when:

  • Cutting quantities are moderate;
  • The required dimension does not change frequently;
  • Repeated cuts are made at the same dimension;
  • Automated positioning is not necessary for the production process.

The manual backgauge keeps the standard machine straightforward while still giving the operator direct control over positioning.

Optional Servo Motorized NC Backgauge

For production with frequent dimension changes or tighter positioning requirements, GMRL can be equipped with a servo motorized NC backgauge in 750 mm or 1000 mm travel.

The NC version uses a ball-screw positioning system. Compared with the rack-and-pinion mechanism of the manual backgauge, mechanical backlash is significantly reduced, allowing more precise and repeatable positioning.

Machine Construction and Sheet Control

GMRL is built as a mechanical industrial guillotine shear for regular thin-sheet cutting.

The mechanical hold-down system secures the sheet before the cut so that cutting forces do not move the material. Hold-down capacity and construction are matched to the cutting capacity of each machine.

GMRL cutting blades are manufactured from original BÖHLER 1.2379 tool steel. The blades are heat treated to 56–59 HRC and all working surfaces are ground after heat treatment.

The upper blade provides two usable cutting edges and the lower blade four. When one edge becomes worn, another edge can be brought into service before regrinding is required.

Optional Ball Transfer Table

The standard GMRL table has a flat surface.

A ball transfer table is available as an option for applications where easier sheet handling or surface protection is important. The balls allow the sheet to travel toward the backgauge with substantially less sliding friction.

This reduces operator effort when positioning larger sheets and helps reduce surface scratching caused by sliding the material directly across the table.

Optional Pneumatic Thin Sheet Support & Discharge System

Thin sheets can sag under their own weight while being fed toward the backgauge. This can affect how accurately the sheet reaches the required backgauge position.

The optional Pneumatic Thin Sheet Support & Discharge System supports the material during positioning to reduce this sagging effect. After cutting, the cut piece is discharged toward the rear of the machine.

Choosing Between GMRL, GMRL-RF and GMRH

GMRL is intended for thinner sheet applications where a straightforward and economical Direct-Gear configuration is preferred.

Choose GMRL when thin-sheet cutting is the main requirement and a manual backgauge suits the production routine. Servo NC positioning can still be added when required.

Consider GMRL-RF when the same thin-sheet cutting principle is required but smaller cut pieces need to be collected from the front of the machine. The GMRL-RF can direct cut pieces up to 400 mm toward the operator through its Send to Rear / Return to Sender configuration.

GMRL and GMRL-RF share the same fundamental cutting principle, manufacturing quality, cutting accuracy and durability. Their main difference is cut-piece handling and standard configuration.

Consider GMRH when higher sheet-thickness capacity and a heavier machine construction are required for more demanding cutting applications.

Cutting Cycle Rate

All five GMRL models have a cutting-cycle capability of up to 35 strokes per minute.

Actual output also depends on how fast the sheet is positioned for the next cut.

For repetitive cutting, the machine can therefore use its full cycle capability only when material feeding and positioning can keep pace.

Typical GMRL Applications

GMRL is suitable for businesses and production environments working primarily with thin sheet material.

Typical applications include:

  • HVAC and ductwork production
  • Steel furniture manufacturing
  • White goods and appliance manufacturing
  • Automotive-related thin-sheet fabrication
  • Electrical cabinets and enclosures
  • General sheet-metal workshops
  • Light industrial fabrication
  • Technical schools, vocational schools and universities

The GMRL 1403, 1603 and 2103 are among the commonly requested models, with the 1403 and 2103 popular according to EBR METAL’s customer and quotation experience.

Model selection is based on material, maximum thickness, cutting width and production needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About the GMRL

GMRL is designed primarily for thin sheet metal cutting. The GMRL 1103, 1403, 1603 and 2103 have a nominal 3 mm cutting capacity, while the GMRL 2603 is rated at 2.5 mm. These capacities are specified for ST37 / S235JR mild steel at approximately 370–400 N/mm² tensile strength.

No. GMRL comes standard with a 750 mm manual backgauge operated by a handwheel, with a numerical mechanical readout and locking mechanism. Servo motorized NC backgauges with 750 mm or 1000 mm travel are available as options.

The standard manual backgauge is suitable where dimensions do not change frequently, cutting quantities are moderate or repeated cuts are made at the same dimension. The servo motorized NC system is better suited to frequent dimension changes or applications requiring more precise and repeatable backgauge positioning.

Both machines use the same fundamental thin-sheet cutting principle and are built to the same manufacturing quality standards. GMRL-RF adds the ability to direct cut pieces up to 400 mm toward the front of the machine through its Send to Rear / Return to Sender configuration. Standard GMRL discharges cut pieces to the rear.

GMRL does not use the front-operated blade-gap adjustment system found on GMRH. Its thinner and relatively narrow cutting-capacity range allows normal production to operate with a fixed blade-gap setting. Fine adjustment remains available at the blade mounting points for servicing, blade wear or after regrinding.

The published capacities are based on ST37 / S235JR mild steel at approximately 370–400 N/mm² tensile strength. Capacity changes with material properties: harder materials such as stainless steel generally require lower thicknesses, while softer materials such as aluminium or copper may permit greater thicknesses. Confirm the material specification with EBR METAL when selecting a machine for materials other than the stated mild-steel reference.

No. The standard machine uses a flat table. A ball transfer table is available as an option to make sheet positioning easier and reduce sliding contact between the sheet and table surface.

Provide the material type, maximum sheet thickness, required cutting width and approximate cutting quantities. Information about how frequently dimensions change and the required positioning accuracy also helps determine whether the standard manual backgauge or an optional servo NC configuration is more appropriate.
