Direct Gear Motorized Guillotine Shears

EBR METAL direct-gear motorized guillotine shears handle fast, repeatable straight cutting of sheet metal in workshops, manufacturing plants and automated production environments.

The range covers GMRH and GMRL series, each available in standard and RF configurations, with different cutting capacities, machine constructions and material-handling options. Compared with hydraulic guillotine shears, direct-gear machines offer a mechanically simpler cutting system for applications where sheet thickness and cutting length fall within their operating range.

The right configuration depends on the material, required capacity and cutting length, as well as how the machine will be used in production.

What Are Direct-Gear Motorized Guillotine Shears?

Direct-gear motorized guillotine shears are mechanically driven sheet metal cutting machines in which the cutting movement is transmitted through a gearbox-driven system rather than a hydraulic cutting circuit.

All EBR METAL Direct-Gear machines use a gearbox and braking system, while a clutch is used on selected models. For sheet thicknesses and cutting lengths within their operating range, this configuration provides fast cutting cycles with relatively straightforward operation and maintenance.

Within the EBR METAL range, Direct-Gear machines are available in two main series — GMRH and GMRL — each also offered in an RF configuration for applications that require additional control over where short cut sheets are discharged.

Direct-Gear Motorized Guillotine Shear Models

EBR METAL offers two Direct-Gear machine series GMRH and GMRL each available in standard and RF configurations.

GMRH and GMRL differ primarily in construction, cutting capacity and standard equipment level. RF versions retain the characteristics of their respective base series while adding front/rear handling capability for short cut sheets.

Direct-Gear vs. Hydraulic Guillotine Shears

Direct-Gear and hydraulic guillotine shears cover different cutting requirements.

For suitable thinner-sheet applications, Direct-Gear machines provide fast cutting cycles without the hydraulic oil, seals and cutting circuit associated with hydraulic shears — a practical, economical option for repetitive straight cutting within their capacity range.

Hydraulic guillotine shears are normally recommended when the required material thickness or cutting length moves beyond the available Direct-Gear range.

EBR METAL Direct-Gear machines are intended primarily for thin to medium sheet cutting.

GMRL is the lower-capacity series. Maximum carbon-steel thickness ratings are tied to specific model and cutting-length combinations; they should not be read as applying across every available machine length. Depending on the model and cutting length, GMRL machines are generally available up to approximately 3 mm carbon steel.

GMRH covers higher cutting capacities, with selected model and cutting-length combinations rated up to 6 mm carbon steel.

The EBR METAL Direct-Gear range does not extend beyond approximately 4 metres cutting length. Where the required thickness or cutting length falls outside the appropriate Direct-Gear range, a hydraulic guillotine shear is normally recommended.

Direct-Gear guillotine shears suit repetitive cutting where cycle time matters. Within suitable thinner-sheet applications, the mechanical drive supports fast, consistent cutting cycles and is used in both standalone industrial production and selected automated sheet-processing systems.

Direct-Gear machines do not use the hydraulic cutting circuit found in hydraulic guillotine shears. There is no hydraulic oil, hydraulic seal system or associated hydraulic cutting-system maintenance.

The machines still contain mechanical drive components that require appropriate maintenance. All EBR METAL Direct-Gear machines use a gearbox and braking system, while selected models also use a clutch.

For applications within their operating range, Direct-Gear machines can offer lower operating and maintenance costs than hydraulic guillotine shears. Their generally lower machine weight can also reduce handling and transportation requirements, depending on the selected model.

Final machine selection must be checked against the specific model, cutting length and material.

Standard GMRH and GMRL machines are appropriate where their normal cut-sheet discharge arrangement suits the production process or where an external material-handling or stacking system is already used.

GMRH-RF and GMRL-RF provide additional control over the discharge direction of short cut sheets.

RF is therefore a material-handling and production-layout configuration rather than a higher specification level of the machine.

RF machines include a manual Send to Rear / Return to Sender system as standard for directing cut pieces up to 400 mm towards either the front or rear of the machine.

A pneumatically operated version of the Send to Rear / Return to Sender system is available as an option. When fitted, the pneumatic system is controlled from the machine’s electrical control panel.

The manual system is standard on RF models, while pneumatic operation is available as an option.

Material and Cutting Capacity

Published machine capacities are normally stated using a reference carbon-steel specification. The same nominal sheet thickness cannot automatically be applied to every material.

Practical cutting capacity changes according to the material’s mechanical properties, particularly its tensile strength. Stainless steel, aluminium, copper and other materials therefore need to be evaluated according to their actual material grade and strength rather than simply applying the machine’s nominal carbon-steel rating.

As a general engineering principle, a machine rated for a particular carbon-steel thickness may have a lower permissible thickness when cutting a higher-strength material such as stainless steel, while a lower-strength material may permit a greater thickness.

Maximum thickness and cutting length must also be considered together. A maximum thickness stated for one model or cutting length should not be assumed to apply across every machine in the same series.

For machine selection, EBR METAL therefore evaluates the material, material grade or tensile strength where available, minimum and maximum sheet thicknesses and required cutting length.

Applications of Direct-Gear Guillotine Shears

Direct-Gear motorized guillotine shears are used where fast, repeatable straight sheet cutting is required within the capacity range of a mechanical shear.

  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • HVAC and ventilation manufacturing
  • Metal enclosure and cabinet production
  • Industrial panel manufacturing
  • General manufacturing
  • Steel service and sheet-processing operations
  • Repetitive sheet cutting
  • Cut-to-length systems
  • Automatic production lines

The production requirement determines the machine choice. A high-volume repetitive cutting application, for example, may call for a different configuration from a workshop carrying out a defined number of cuts, even where material thickness is similar.

Direct-Gear Shears for Cut-to-Length and Automated Lines

GMRH and GMRL machines can be configured for integration into cut-to-length and automatic production lines.

Standard GMRH and GMRL configurations are generally preferred for these applications because the production line may already include its own sheet transport, stacking or material-handling system. In such a layout, an RF configuration may provide no practical advantage.

EBR METAL can adapt the guillotine shear to the requirements of the complete line. Depending on the project, equipment that duplicates a function already provided elsewhere in the system — such as a standalone backgauge or equipment not required by the line — can be omitted or adapted.

Where the project specifically requires cut material to be directed towards the front of the machine, an RF configuration can also be considered.

Why Choose EBR METAL Direct-Gear Guillotine Shears?

Application-Based Machine Selection

EBR METAL selects the machine according to the actual cutting requirement rather than nominal sheet thickness alone. Material and tensile strength, thickness range, cutting length, production requirements and material flow are considered when determining the appropriate series and configuration.

Configurations for Different Production Requirements

GMRH and GMRL machines can be configured according to the application rather than being limited to one fixed equipment package.

Optional equipment and project-specific configurations allow the machines to be adapted for standalone operation, repetitive production or integration into larger production systems.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

EBR METAL keeps commonly required spare parts available from stock and responds quickly to replacement-parts requirements.

The mechanically straightforward Direct-Gear system, together with spare-parts availability and technical support, is intended to support reliable long-term operation and practical maintenance.

Two-Year Warranty

EBR METAL provides a two-year warranty for GMRH, GMRH-RF, GMRL and GMRL-RF Direct-Gear Motorized Guillotine Shears.

The warranty is supported by spare-parts availability and technical assistance throughout the machine’s working life.

Find the Right Direct-Gear Guillotine Shear for Your Production

For an accurate machine recommendation, please provide:

  • Material type and grade, where known
  • Minimum and maximum sheet thickness
  • Required cutting length
  • Expected production volume or cutting frequency
  • Required cut-sheet handling
  • Whether the machine will operate independently or as part of a production line
  • Any special equipment or automation requirements

EBR METAL can then determine the appropriate GMRH, GMRH-RF, GMRL or GMRL-RF configuration or recommend a hydraulic guillotine shear where the cutting requirement falls outside the Direct-Gear range.

Frequently Asked Questions About Direct-Gear Motorized Guillotine Shears

GMRH is the heavier-duty Direct-Gear series, with heavier construction, greater machine weight, higher cutting capacities and a more comprehensive standard equipment level.

GMRL uses a lighter construction and a more basic standard configuration for lower-capacity applications, making it the more economical choice where the additional capacity and equipment of GMRH are not required.

GMRH and GMRL are the standard Direct-Gear configurations. GMRH-RF and GMRL-RF add front/rear handling capability for short cut sheets.

For cut pieces up to 400 mm, RF machines include a manual Send to Rear / Return to Sender system as standard. A pneumatically operated version, controlled from the electrical panel, is available as an option.

Capacity depends on the machine model, cutting length and material properties.

GMRL machines are generally available for carbon-steel capacities up to approximately 3 mm depending on the model and cutting length. GMRH covers higher-capacity requirements, with selected model and cutting-length combinations rated up to 6 mm carbon steel.

Individual model specifications should always be checked for the required cutting length and material.

Potentially, yes, provided the required thickness is within the machine’s permissible capacity for the particular material.

Cutting capacity changes according to the mechanical properties of the material, particularly tensile strength. A machine’s nominal carbon-steel capacity should therefore not be applied directly to stainless steel, aluminium, copper or other materials.

A hydraulic guillotine shear is normally recommended when the required sheet thickness or cutting length is beyond the available EBR METAL Direct-Gear range.

Direct-Gear machines provide a fast and economical mechanical cutting solution within their specified capacity range, while hydraulic guillotine shears cover heavier or longer cutting requirements.

Yes. GMRH and GMRL machines can be configured for cut-to-length and automated production systems.

Standard configurations are generally preferred where the line already includes its own material-handling or stacking equipment. RF configurations can also be used where the project specifically requires cut material to be directed towards the front of the machine.

Direct-Gear machines do not have the hydraulic cutting circuit, hydraulic oil and seals associated with hydraulic guillotine shears.

They are mechanical machines and still require appropriate maintenance of their drive and moving components. All EBR METAL Direct-Gear machines use a gearbox and braking system, while a clutch is used on selected models.

Specific maintenance requirements depend on the machine model and configuration.

EBR METAL needs the material type and grade or tensile strength where known, minimum and maximum sheet thickness, cutting length, expected production volume and required material-handling method.

For automated lines or special projects, the way the guillotine shear will interface with the rest of the production system should also be defined.
